Net profit per sale is what is left after eBay's fees, your costs and the returns allowance. Profit margin is that profit as a share of the order value, the number to compare across products and prices. Return on cost divides profit by what you paid for the item.

The extra lines answer the pricing questions. At $X instead shows the profit and margin at the two comparison prices, with the same costs and fees, so you see what a price cut or rise does before you change the listing. Price for a N% margin is the lowest item price that leaves your target margin, worked out on eBay's real fee schedule, including the per-order fee and the rate change above $7,500. Profit a month multiplies the profit per sale by your monthly sales.

If the margin looks healthy but the account is not making money, the gap is usually in costs not entered here: unsold stock, time, and the Below Standard surcharge if the account has one. The break-even calculator shows the lowest price at which a sale stops losing money, and the ROI calculator works on a whole sourcing lot.

Worked example

A $100 sale, step by step

The calculator opens with these numbers: an item sold for $100 with free shipping, bought for $48, $8 to post and $1.50 of packaging, no Promoted Listings, on eBay.com's most-categories rate.

  • Gross order value: $100.00
  • Final value fee (13.6%): −$13.60
  • Per-order fee (order over $10): −$0.40
  • Item cost: −$48.00
  • Your shipping: −$8.00
  • Packaging: −$1.50
  • Net profit: $28.50, a 28.5% margin and a 59.4% return on the $48 cost.

Add a 5% Promoted Listings rate and the ad fee is charged on the whole $100: profit falls to $23.50 and the margin to 23.5%. That is why the ad rate belongs in the calculation before you list, not after the sale.

To see only what eBay deducts, use the eBay fee calculator. To find the lowest price that still covers every cost, use the break-even calculator.

The comparison lines show the same sale at $90 and $110. At $90 the fees fall to $12.64 and profit to $19.86 (a 22.1% margin). At $110 profit rises to $37.14 (33.8%). With a 25% target margin, the price that reaches it is $94.30.

FAQ

eBay profit calculator questions

How is eBay profit calculated?

Gross order value (item price plus shipping charged) minus eBay fees (final value fee, per-order fee and any Promoted Listings fee), minus your item cost, shipping cost, packaging and other costs. Margin divides that by the gross order value.

What is the difference between margin and return on cost?

Margin is profit as a share of what the buyer paid; it tells you how much of each sale you keep. Return on cost is profit as a share of what you paid for the item; it tells you how hard your stock money is working. A cheap item can have a thin margin and a high return on cost.

How do I find the price for a target margin on eBay?

Enter your costs and a target margin. The calculator searches for the lowest item price whose profit, after the final value fee, per-order fee, ads, returns allowance and your costs, is at least that share of the order value. It uses the real fee schedule, so it stays right where the per-order fee or the fee rate changes.

How do I compare two prices for the same item?

Enter them under Compare at price. Each line shows the profit and margin at that price with the same costs, fees and returns allowance, so a price change can be judged before you edit the listing.

What does sales per month do?

It multiplies the profit per sale by the number of sales you expect in a month. Fees are charged per sale, so the profit per sale does not change with volume.

Why is my payout lower than this?

Category exceptions, international fees, a Below Standard rating (6% added to final value fees), returns and payment disputes all reduce the payout. The calculator shows a normal sale in the selected category.

Should I charge shipping or offer free shipping?

The final value fee applies to the total the buyer pays, shipping included, so the fee is the same either way for the same total. The choice is about how the listing compares with others in search.

What is a good profit margin on eBay?

There is no single right number: it depends on the category, how fast the item sells and how often it comes back. Set a minimum margin that still leaves a profit after a typical return and the time each sale takes, then check every new product against it here before you buy stock. Items that only work at a thin margin need to sell fast.
