eBay product research & sourcing

eBay product research: stock what sells, at a margin that survives the fees

eBay product research from sold data: demand, sell-through, competition and margin after every fee, with a sourcing route for the products that pass.

If you source for eBay, you know these

How stock turns into dead money

Researching active listings

Counting what others are trying to sell instead of what buyers bought.

Margin before fees

A product that looks profitable until the final value fee, per-order fee and shipping are added.

High price, slow turn

A good margin on something that sells twice a quarter ties up cash for months.

Crowded categories

Hundreds of sellers on the same item at the same price, with nothing to separate yours.

Returns ignored

Categories with high return rates, costed as if every sale were final.

Trend-chasing

Buying deep into a product whose sold data is already falling.

What we do

Four tests, applied to every product

We research from what sold: volume, price, sell-through and the number of sellers taking the sales. Then we work the margin back from a realistic selling price, after the final value fee, per-order fee, shipping and returns. Products that pass all four tests go on the list with a sourcing route. The ones that fail go on a second list with the reason, because knowing what not to buy is half the value.

Why it matters

The margin is set before the listing goes live

Most eBay profit problems are sourcing problems that show up later as pricing problems. By the time a product is listed, its landed cost is fixed and the fees are fixed, so the only lever left is price, and the market sets that. Research that works the margin backwards from the selling price, after fees and returns, is what makes the listing work possible.

Our eBay product research works out margin on eBay's published selling fees for the category, before a single unit is bought.

FAQ

Questions sellers ask before they get in touch

What data do you research from?

Sold listings, not active ones. Terapeak product research in Seller Hub shows what actually sold, at what price, how often and from how many sellers. Active listings only show what people are trying to sell.

What makes a product pass?

Four tests together: steady sold volume, a sell-through rate that means stock turns, a competitive field you can enter on price and presentation, and a margin that survives the final value fee, the per-order fee, shipping and a realistic return rate. A product that passes three is usually a trap.

Do you source the products as well?

We identify sourcing routes for products that pass, such as wholesale, liquidation, private label or local sourcing, with landed cost worked back from the target price. Buying decisions and supplier contracts stay yours.

Can you research a category I already sell in?

Yes, and it is often more useful: the gaps next to what already sells, the variations buyers search for that you do not stock, and the lines to drop because they tie up cash.

What do I receive?

A short list of products with the sold data, sell-through, price band, competition notes, margin after all fees, and the sourcing route, plus the products that failed and why.
