eBay VeRO notice: why your listings were removed and what to do

An eBay VeRO removal means a rights owner in eBay’s Verified Rights Owner programme reported your listing and eBay took it down. eBay does not judge the claim; only the rights owner can ask for the listing back. One removal is a warning; the risk is every other listing like it.

What happened

What a VeRO removal means

eBay VeRO is the Verified Rights Owner programme. Brands and other intellectual property owners report listings they believe infringe their trademark, copyright or other rights, and eBay removes them. The removal message names the rights owner and gives their contact details.

eBay does not judge the claim. The dispute is between you and the rights owner, and only the rights owner can ask eBay to reinstate a listing removed in error. For US listings a formal counter-notice is also possible, after which eBay reinstates the listing in 10 business days unless the rights owner starts a court action.

Five steps to respond to an eBay VeRO notice: read the notice, stop and hold, contact the rights owner, gather proof, respond to eBay

Why this happens

Why listings get reported

  1. Brand name used for items that are not that brand

"Compatible with", "like" or "style" phrasing in titles that reads as trademark use.

  2. Brand images or text copied

Product photos or descriptions taken from the brand's own site.

  3. Items the brand does not allow resold in that form

Parallel imports, repackaged goods, or items sold as new that the rights owner treats as unauthorised.

  4. Counterfeit or suspected counterfeit stock

Where supply cannot be traced to an authorised source.

  5. Brand sweeps

Rights owners often report a whole brand at once, catching legitimate listings alongside infringing ones.

What to review first

Before you reply, review these

  • The removal message: which listings, which rights owner, which right (trademark, copyright, other) and their contact details
  • Every other live listing with the same brand name, images or description, before the rights owner finds them
  • Your supply: invoices from an authorised or traceable source for the reported items
  • Whether the listing used the brand's own images or text
  • Any earlier VeRO or policy removals on the account in the last 90 days
Do not send an angry message to the rights owner, and do not relist the same item unchanged. Both end any chance of a retraction and add to the violation count.

How Slayva helps

How Slayva handles a VeRO removal

We read the notice and search the whole catalogue for the same exposure first, then end or rewrite what would draw the same report. Where the report looks mistaken and you have the evidence, we draft a short factual message to the rights owner asking for a retraction. Where it was right, we rewrite the listing so the item can still be sold without the violation. And we put a pre-listing check in place for new stock.

  • Catalogue-wide exposure search
  • Retraction request with evidence, where the report is mistaken
  • Compliant rewrites where it is not
  • Counter-notice flagged only where appropriate, with advice to take legal guidance
  • Pre-listing checks for new stock

The order that works
  1. Save the removal message and the rights owner's details.
  2. Search the catalogue for the same brand, images and phrasing.
  3. Fix or end every exposed listing.
  4. Contact the rights owner, once, factually, with evidence.
  5. Check new stock before it is listed.

FAQ

Common questions

Who removed my listing, eBay or the brand?

The report came from a rights owner in eBay's Verified Rights Owner (VeRO) programme; eBay removed the listing on the strength of that report. eBay does not decide whether the claim is right. The rights owner's contact details are in the removal message.

How do I get the listing reinstated?

If the report was a mistake, ask the rights owner for a retraction. Only the rights owner can ask eBay to reinstate a listing removed in error. A short, factual message with evidence of authenticity or authorisation is what gets a retraction.

What is a counter-notice?

For US listings, eBay accepts a valid counter-notice. eBay passes it to the rights owner and reinstates the listing after 10 business days unless the rights owner tells eBay it has filed a court action. It is a legal step with legal consequences; take advice before using it.

Can repeated VeRO removals suspend my account?

Yes. Repeated intellectual property violations escalate to selling restrictions and suspension. After the first removal, find and fix every other listing that would draw the same report.

The rights owner is asking for money to retract. Is that normal?

Keep the messages and do not pay. Tell eBay through Seller Help. A legitimate rights owner retracts a mistaken report; it does not sell retractions.
